overview learnmore

Neil Simon’s coming-of-age story follows a year in the life of teenaged brothers Jay and Arty, left in the care of their domineering grandmother in Yonkers, N.Y. in 1942. While caring for the younger Arty, Jay negotiates his own path to adulthood in his dysfunctional family – sweet, mentally challenged Aunt Bella; Uncle Louie, who’s hiding out from the mob; and Grandma Kurnitz, an stern woman with no tolerance for weakness. The 1991 winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama is considered Simon’s most affecting work, blending comedy and hardship with deeply drawn characters to create a moving story of family, forgiveness and survival.
